Today is my last day as a Linden. If you're one of those people who's been following me via FB or Twitter or $deity forbid an RSS feed of this poor little blog because of my Linden-ness, here's your heads-up to unsub. There -- can't say I never did anything for you. :-)

Though I haven't been in the office for weeks, it's amazing how much you can keep up with via IRC. I know that the lights are back on in the basement, for example. There will be Mexican food for lunch - which I admit I won't miss being at my old desk for because the food-smell on Fridays can be kind of overwhelming for basement-dwellers.

The part of this that has been so difficult - aside from giving up the Best Desk In The Building - is when I painfully realized this week that I will no longer get to soak daily in the awesomeness that is my fellow Lindens. LL is an organization filled with people I love to hang out with. What I'll miss most is that I'll no longer have access to all of them all at once whenever I feel like it. I won't be dropping into IRC late at night or on the weekends just to see who's around and how things are going. The time of majestic porbeagles and cake is behind me now. I'm certain there will be some withdrawal, so I'm counting on Twitter and FB to get me through the disconnect adjustment.

If any Lindens are reading this, please know I am exceptionally proud to have worked with y'all. Thank you for making the last three years challenging, rewarding, and never boring. I wish you nothing but the best.

Well, time to wrap this up so I can tidy up those very last loose-end emails. I'll be at Stitches West tomorrow (thanks, Abby, for picking me up on the GFI!!) and at Potlatch for a bit on Sunday. Next week, I start a new adventure.

I'd actually forgotten you were a Linden! Have you another job lined up or anything?

I don't have another gig lined up yet, but I'm definitely looking! I've had a few pings via my Linked-In page so I'm hopeful I'll find something soon.

The worst part is the email withdrawal. Going from the massive email flood every day to almost nothing makes you feel like you're on a deserted island.

Not quite dead to me... Ah, Morgan Webb. How I have crushed on you for years. And now, you have broken my crush with the blatant misinformation about SL in your recent Morgan Minute. How can I look past this complete and utter disregard for, uh, research? I'm saddened by this greatly. Your data is just so... wrong.

Now we've hit the big time. Can it get any better than The Onion?

Don't remind me of how SL allowed my brother to be in Discover magazine before me. I'M the successful scientist, dammit.

SL is often weird. But "Judge Alex" trying to understand SL is extra weird.

I don't exactly remember everything I said at the LL GDC party. It was so loud and so crazy. It was great fun though, and I now have a pic on the Chron blog. Go, me! On another note, I'm off to SXSW to recruit for Linden Lab and will be back next week.

It's GDC week. I'm off to a recruiting party for LL tonight, then booth babe duty tomorrow afternoon. Off to Austin for SXSW recruiting on Friday, so it's basically a "don't get any work done" kind of week for me. Ah, well. At least I finished my Ribbi Cardi finally.

Ah, the job. Sometimes (often) it's stressful. Daily, it's weird. And then some days you have something out in "teh media" that makes me go "whoa, cool!" The NYT travel article on SL is just such an article. I'm not sure why I like this one in particular. Perhaps because it's not supergushy. Perhaps because it's not all about the economy. It showcases that SL is a cool place to visit, and like all destinations, sometimes people visit again and again. Some even move there.
There are lots of people making personal connections in SL, but I haven't really been one of them. I still like to visit and shop, and I keep a home there. Stephen has lots of friends in SL, and they'll come over to our house to hang out. I like that -- kinda like I'm pirating his friends for socialization, but that's Good Enough (TM) for me. I always was more about entertaining at home than going out on the town.

I saw an otter from the ferry this morning. Oh. My. God. SO cute. I'm taking it as a good omen for the day. We'll see if that actually pans out.

Second Life is starting to creep into real life. Stephen and I have a house there now - a nice one, with a water view and a hot tub he just put in. Not much furniture yet. I like to watch the sun set over the water, sitting on the edge of the house. When I'm leaving work, it's getting to where the easiest way to tell Stephen I'm enroute is to go in-world and IM him. He's building, landscaping, buying clothes... Not going to say WHERE here, because it's my alt and I'd like to keep that separate from my work account.
And every now and then -- maybe this is just a factor of being in SF -- I see people on the street that look so surreal they MUST be avatars. They can't be REAL. The guy wearing a bra and panties, knee-high boots, standing on top of his car singing for Tool tickets? Too weird to be RL. Must be SL. That amazingly beautiful, slender woman with the sexy walk and 8 thin dreads per ponytail? Looks like prim hair. Looks like an avatar.
I am a Linden now, so that probably skews my boundaries somewhat. Those racks and racks of machines we're maintaining and moving around? That's the world. Be careful with the world! If I do this, will it destroy the world? Actual very weird questions.
I will say this - if YOU are in SL, you should check out the current preview over the next week. People are doing amazingly creative things with flexible objects. My favorite is the field of "tentacles" that will reach for you as you walk through them. Fun and creepy!

BART has been a mixed bag this week. There have been some major delays, one of which led me to just abandon the whole train concept and take the ferry over to the godforsaken island for Stephen to pick me up. On the other hand, yesterday morning there was the most adorable pug in a pet carrier, and he was sleeping with his little pink tongue hanging out. It doesn't quite make up for the hours of delay... but it did take the edge off.
Also, the people that I encountered on the ferry fiasco were so amazingly nice. When I asked "how much is the ferry", a complete stranger offered to buy my ticket if I didn't have enough money (I did). Then, out of nowhere, ANOTHER kind stranger bought tickets for BOTH of us. We gave one of the aforementioned strangers a ride home from the godforsaken island over to Emeryville. It was also really beautiful watching the sun go down behind the city and the stormclouds beyond. Like the pug, it didn't quite make up for the long delay... but it took the edge off.

In-between days. Today is the first of my in-between days, wherein I am in-between jobs. New one starts next week, and with it comes a new commute (on the train, so hopefully not so bad). Karen's insights on walking in the rainy city gave me an excuse to get another pair of shoes - some low rain boots this time. Oh, and another pair of Docs while I'm in there... and aren't those pink Timberlands amazing? Damn you, Zappos! OTOH, I bought and returned an amazing but too-small pair of Fluevog boots via Zappos, and their customer service totally rocks. Two thumbs up.
Speaking of Fluevogs... OMFG these boots are calling to me. The problem, of course, is that they probably are for the skinny-calved. I might pop by and try them on, though, just to satisfy my curiosity...
