I love William Gibson's books. And now, his blog, too.
"Believing Bush is conservative in any traditional sense is like believing that a Formula One racer with the Perrier logo on its side is full of mineral water. "

Rainy rainy day. But some knitting news. I started seaming the cardigan last night, after blocking the pieces. What the hell was I thinking when we blocked them? Those sleeves are WAY too long, and the armholes aren't really the same shape front and back. But I'm working around it. It will be okay in the end, right? And I can always re-block it to a better shape... right? Maybe my first sweater project shouldn't have involved so much heavy seaming in a black/green/blue color. But it's still lovely.
And socks. Socks aplenty. I'm working on socks for gifts, socks for me, socks all around.
And, as an added bonus, apparently the bootie-along blog now shows up ABOVE my blog in BlogThis, so I accidentally posted this same post there. But I whacked it. Hopefully, no harm done.

A very happy memory. On August 21st of this year -- a few months ago -- I went to Houston to see DMB with my aunts and Kimmy. Here's a pic from that night:
That's Aunt Pat on the left, then me, Kimmy, and Aunt Doreen. They're my mother's sisters, but don't hold that against them. We drank and sang and basically had a great time at the show.
I just heard that Doreen, who has been fighting breast cancer for many many years -- maybe 10 years? -- has gotten some bad news. Sad news. And I will probably be going to Houston within the week to go see her while I can. I'll probably also be a wreck at that point, but right now, I'm still calm.

Comments:
Doreen's news is sad. Lots of thoughts and love to you and Doreen.

This is a great picture of y'all. I'm glad you have had the chance in recent years to make lots of happy memories with both your Aunts. =)

I hope Karrie reads this post. In fact, I think that all the lovely ladies from the Mel-O-Dee should stop whatever you might be drinking (or risk the twin fountains of victory, as Dear Stevie calls it) and check that link. Seriously. You must all see The Museum of Kitschy Stitches!! Go forth this instant!

already made googly eyes at the PTA woman this morning. i could totally maintain eye contact - because i am morbidly fascinated by her outfit.

I love my husband. He says gems like this:
The great thing about Bill Murray is that he gives hope to tall, dorky guys everywhere that we, too, may someday get a girl like Scarlett Johansson.
Of course, the best part was when he pointed out that there must be some truth to this hope, since he got me. What a sweetie he can be!

Hello, bandwagon. My favorite Christopher Reeve-related memory: I remember when he hosted Saturday Night Live. It was in 1985. I remember the "Superman Auditions" sketch particularly, when they shot at those auditioning and tried to get them to catch the bullets. IIRC, in the sketch Reeve is the only one who survives the auditions (though he doesn't pass any of the tests), and manages to get the part by staying alive.

Sob! I missed the Knit-Out. I was sick. Was it fun? Did y'all have a great time and spend lotsa dough at Article Pract? I'll be looking for a full report tomorrow night!

I left very early, but only b/c I had previous plans. It was very fun. Very nice people - including someone who made everyone stitch holders! Hmmmm. Makes me feel like a bit of a Tuesday night slacker, how 'bout you?

See you tonight!

Cheryl

p.s. Karrie & I told the Knit Out people about the Mel-o-Dee -- maybe someone will join us!

Blogger seems to be having some sort of difficulty. And just when Molly's DSL came back!

Back. Seems the credit card I used to get the website had a bad expiration date. But now I'm all paid and back up and running.
Off to the Doctor soon. But first!

Dear ${DEITY}, I am so hooked on this new game. I'm over playing sniper against Ewoks (which makes me a Traitor on the awards screen of Star Wars Battlefront, but I digress). My Stevie brought home the weirdest, most addictive game I have ever played... and I am in love with it. Seriously. The banter alone is worth it. Plus, I managed to roll over a bunch of crabs and cats! And they make some seriously cute alarmed noises. This one is SO worth picking up -- for $20, it's a steal.

Oh, how I love Molly Ivins. My favorite quote her most recent column: "Sometimes I get the feeling the whole country is being run by Paris Hilton."

Heading home soon. I'm still feeling a wee bit sickly. I guess I haven't yet recovered from whatever this yucky mini-cold has wrought. No big plans for tonight, though. A bath, then some time curled up with the Tivo and a sock-in-progress. Or maybe the cardigan. We'll see if I can handle those tiny size-2 stitches tonight. Despite drinking way more last night than I probably should have, I still managed to get an inch or so completed on the sock. Not too shabby.

Promises, promises. I'm actually going to keep this one. But first let me say an emphatic thank you to the non-prissy non-snobby knitting circle. Seriously. Most of the people in that sock class were great, but there were just a few... At any rate, back to the good news:
I finished a sock!

The other one still needs a heel, but not bad for a week's work! As promised, here's a pic of the last socks I made:

Which are, as previously mentioned, now destined to be a Christmas present. And here's another:

That one is a bit hard to see, since it's on that stash basket. And what is in the stash basket, you may ask? Both the lovely and the "why is that there"?
First, the good stuff:

Check out that Tesla. Cotton and stainless steel. Currently, destined to be a skinny scarf.
And a few other lovelies:

The polar will be a present. The Crystal FX... I don't know yet. I'm awfully fond of the grenadine one. Maybe I need a glittery red scarf?
And now the ugly, but it has a purpose:

I was thinking about making a Hallowig. I'm just not sure when I'll have the time.
And that's not all that's in the stash basket. Some Calmer for Audrey, dish cloth cotton, and a few skeins of sock yarn round out the bunch.
And one closing pic. My poor in-progress cardigan. Who will get to it first? Bonnie or the giant squid?

Now, I'm off to bed. I'm coming down with something and I don't want to be sick for knitting night!

Knittery update. Despite working both days this weekend, I managed to complete both socks for my class tonight. Now, just to pop in the heels! After that, I'm going to start on another pair. See, the first socks I made, though I love them, are just too damn big for me. They've gone into the Christmas present pile - possibly for an uncle. And now I'm trying to make a matching (smaller) pair for his wife. Those two are just goofy enough to wear matching stripey socks. I'll take a pic this week -- maybe Wednesday -- of all the socks. Other than that, even though I have full confidence that I know how to finish my cardigan, I haven't bought buttons yet which is keeping me from working the button-holed side. So, one more side, then finishing on that. Also -- great news! MoMo found the denim baby bootie pattern I left in Dallas. She's popping it in the mail, and I'm back in business for the bootie-along.

I'm feeling much more confident about my knitting lately. Though I'm not yet doing a lot with color, I think I can handle basic stitch patterns and follow written instructions. I can knit in the round now and make socks two different ways. I can assemble finished pieces. Yes, indeed my confidence is up some now.

Jamie and I are thinking about going in together on a blocking board. Any suggestions out there? Should I just have Stevie make one out of insulation board?

If you don't read The Knitting Curmudgeon, you should. Even if you don't give a damn about knitting, it's fabulous take-no-prisoners reading. I especially like the term "intarsia abortions" she uses to describe ghastly yet difficult-to-knit creations that will be on full show at Stitches East. I cannot WAIT for the hall of shame gallery.
