@KristyT @buzz *A* database. Probably more than one. This may be one of the ones they use. In established companies, it’s rare for there to be only one market data source informing their ranges. Typically it’s a blend of a few sources, plus recruiter feedback.
@EricaJoy @ekp But one thing I want to clarify about all of the salary survey products – they aren’t SETTING the ranges, they’re aggregating/reporting what companies are doing.
@EricaJoy @ekp This of course is why the “boring” parts of running companies are worth investment and focus. They are the grounding of how you run your org – and compensation is a metric you can’t fake. You either pay people or you don’t. Of course, I have STRONG OPINIONS about comp. :-)
@EricaJoy @ekp There are MANY survey products for compensation, and they’re not secrets. Just tools of the trade. When a company decides to target 65% of market or similar, those numbers have to come from somewhere.
@EricaJoy @ekp All of the salary survey products have good points (lots of comparisons that give at least some sense of a picture of what’s happening in the market) and bad points (they get stale, it’s hard to track fast changes, and they aren’t giving deep insights so much as guidelines).
