In summary: paying someone a high salary isn’t enough to buy loyalty and never has been. But don’t pretend that pay isn’t important. It’s hugely important, and it always has been.

And hopefully by now companies have internalized that PEOPLE WILL TALK about their comp now. You may have been able to tell us GenX folk that it was “illegal to talk about pay” but the younger generations are (thankfully) not buying that crap.
This goes back to the whole “people don’t quit because of money, they quit because of managers” thing. Absolutely true… provided the employee feels like at a minimum they get what everyone else is getting. Inconsistencies kill trust.
So maybe it’s not just about the bottom line cash for people – but that’s hardly been only true for GenZ. That’s been (at a minimum) GenX onward. No one likes to feel like they’re being taken advantage of, even if they’re making bank.
And specifically, CONSISTENT AND FAIR PAY matters a lot. I don’t care if someone is paid exceptionally well. If they discover their less-qualified colleague is making more, well then that will piss them off. Trust will be lost. Jobs will be quit.
In practice, this seems to be trying to say “money isn’t all that matters!” and yeah, no kidding. Money isn’t the only thing that matters. But it still matters. Let’s not pretend otherwise.
This is the part that stuck with me, no surprise. I get that there are still people holding fast to the idea that “people don’t quit because of money” but people totally quit jobs because of money. It’s not the only reason, but it’s a big reason. https://t.co/3jvvi9fFgz
